Dexter Boozer,
Owner and General Manager of
DRB Construction, is an
African-American builder from South Jersey who says
that there is a way to reduce those ever-increasing
utility bills. Dexter believes that everyone can be
energy self-sufficient—and he’s proved it by
outfitting his own home with geothermal and solar
panel energy generators. Dexter's plan is to outfit
every home he builds with the capacity to generate
its own power.
Dexter believes that utility bills are another
component in making Black people poorer. It’s not in
the utility companies’ best interest to make solar
technology common knowledge, so you must keep
funneling your hard earned dollars into the accounts
of the big utility companies.
Trained as an avionics technician in the U.S. Army,
Dexter first became intrigued by energy
self-sufficiency by going to home shows in cities
and towns where he was stationed. The technology
seemed obvious and easy to fathom. Once he realized
how the process worked, it seems like the logical
thing to do to save money.
Initially the geothermal and solar energy-generating
systems were cost prohibitive. It would cost $14,000
just to do the solar panels, and another $21,000 to
set up geothermal heat. Convinced of the
money-saving potential of the systems, Dexter
refused to be dissuaded. He scoured the trade
periodicals, embarking on a search for a cost
effective way to take advantage of the technology.
He finally found it in a magazine article that
talked about incentive programs for homeowners who
took advantage of energy self-sufficiency
technology, whereby local utilities would bankroll
half the cost of retrofitting.
Currently,
Dexter is looking to build homes in Myrtle Beach,
S.C.; Fayetteville, N.C.; retrofit four properties
in Glassboro, N.J., and develop low-income housing
in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia—all to be
fitted with solar and geothermal energy generating
systems.
